Abstract
From I January to 15 March five vessels were monitoring the spawning migration of capelin. The migration started in early
February from the area north and northeast of the Skolpen Bank along three different routs. The first influx of the capelin following the most western route reached the coast of Norway about 1 March. The main part of the spawning population, which was the second and third influx, migrated south—northwest
and southwest, respectivly. toward the Vardø—Kiberg area where the spawning started around 15 March.
The 1970 yearclass dominated the spawning population. The capelin seemed to have migrated at an average speed of 6 to 8
nautical miles per day.
