Abstract
Co-operation between the Institute of Marine Research, Directorate of Fisheries, Bergen and the Institute of Genetics, University of Copenhagen, was started in 1961 with the object of compiling the gene frequency of haemoglobin types in cod in Norwegian waters. In 1962 4,327 blood samples were collected and analysed from 32 different localities in the coastal waters from the Oslofjord to Dønna, in the Lofoten area during the "skrei"-fisheries as well as one sample from the Barents Sea. A difference in the gene frequency was found between coastal cod and "skrei" in the samples collected, but it is not known if the transition between the populations is gradual or abrupt. In the case of the coastal cod, the frequencies reveal a clear change along the Norwegian coast, but the number of localities investigated was too few to state if the frequency is continous or discontinous.
