This article is worked out on the basis of a theme given by the evaluation committee in connection with the present author's doctorate. The article gives a brief survey of the physical background for upwelling and the most important upwelling areas in the world oceans and deals primarily with the effects of upwelling on production of organic matter and its conversion to higher forms of life. The more direct effects of upwelling, e.g. on behaviour and mortality of fish are also discussed.en_US
