Abstract
The cruise was carried out by R.V. "G.O.Sars" and mainly confined to
the area of the Polar Front. The front was localized by working a grid of
CTD stations.
The blue whiting stock was found to be dispersed over wide areas, and no
dense concentrations were observed, The distribution was in general restricted by water masses colder than +2°C.
The fish density did not vary significantly from one locality to another. A
stock assessment was based on mean integrator values in a grid of subareas,
and the stock in the surveyed area was assessed at 1.7 million
tonnes. The assumption of a similar distribution in the entire Norwegian
Sea is suggestive of a total stock of about 2.5 million tonnes.
Near Jan Mayen trial shrimp trawling was carried out. In 5 hauls catches
varied between 120 and 600 kg per trawl hour.
