From 16 September to 7 October a survey was made on the Barents Sea capelin stock with observations on its distribution, abundance and age composition. Compared to the two previous years, the sea temperature this autumn was lower, and the capelin were distributed more southerly and westerly. The main concentrations were found from Hope Island to 55°E, between 76° and 78° N. The 1974 year class will make up the main component of the spawning stock in 1978. This year class have had a relative good individual growth, and most of it are expected to become mature in the next spawning season. The size of the 1978 spawning stock was assessed to be 24 mill. hl.en
