In 1978 the temperature in the deep waters of the Skagerrak dropped by approximately 1/2°C after having remained at a maximum level during five years. After increasing to the last years level by the end of the year, the temperature decreased 1.5°C in 1979 caused by overflow of cold and dence waters formed in the central North Sea during the severe winter. The exchange in 1979 was less significant compared to the situation in 1963 because the salinity of the shelf water was 0.2°/00 lower during the cooling period of the last year than in 1963.en
