Contrary to popular opinion, the equivalent beam angle (~) is not determined solely by the transducer directivity. Rather, like the target strength TS, it also depends on the scattering properties of the target fish, but relative to the detection threshold. The connection between the two quantities, (~) and TS, is elucidated. A method of application is illustrated through an example.no_NO
