There have been many experimental studies on acoustic shadowing, but once the effect is quantified, how is the compensation to be effected? This work shows how, through postprocessing of stored time series, containing the depth dependence of the volume backscattering strength for each ping, by a simple formula. The a priori components of this are the mean backscattering cross section and the mean extinction cross section.no_NO
