Abstract
From 7 January to 15 March a joint investigation on the
distribution of capelin and cod was carried out by three
vessels. During the first 2/3 of the period the spawning
migration of capelin was the main research object, and during
the last part observations were made mainly on the distribution,
abundance and size composition of cod.
The migration of capelin started in the middle of February
from an accumulating area northeast of the Skolpen Bank. The
main part of the spawning population migrated southwards
toward the Murman Coast. After this the influx followed the
coast northwest toward the Vardø-Kiberg area where spawning
took place during the last 2-3 weeks of March.
The spawning population was dominated by the 1972 year-class.
