Introduction: The dynamics of marine ecosystems in the context of climatic change
are of considerable practical and scientific concern. The practical
concern stems from the need to manage the global ocean or at least
large parts of it. The study of ecosystem dynamics helps to identify
those parameters that drive long-term variability of biological productivity
and hence provide a starting point for long-term forecasts
for the optimal management of fisheries. Ecosystem dynamics also provides
insights into the way in which systems in the sea are affected
by pollution and reveals where regulation is needed. As anthropogenic
inputs into the sea increase, their impact upon the fish stocks will
become more obvious and the need for interaction between fisheries and
pollution management will become more urgent. The stakes are raised by
the climatic change now facing us.
