Organic waste and antibiotics from aquaculture

Abstract

During the past year three joint projects have been conducted concerning the fate of organic waste and antibiotics from various Norwegian fish farms. The projects are investigating the following topics: - decomposition rate of organic waste, flux between the sediment and water of various inorganic compounds, and distribution of waste through the marine food chain - the persistance of antibiotics in sediments and its degradation in seawater - development of resistance in bacteria in the sediment. The collaboration of the projects is planned to be extended next year into a larger project as part of a national program concerning the ecological effects of antibiotics.
